The painting is signed "VINCENTIUS CAMPUS / CREMO.S.F. / 1576, and represents a cherished theme of the christian tradition, the assumption of Mary, here revered by Saint Rocco and the customer of the pianting, that is Giulio Roncovieri or Giulio Pallavicino. The devotion of Saint Rocco, invoked against the plague, natural disasters and malady of the cattle, began in Montpellier (city of origin of the saint) in the XV century, spreading in the north of Italy, especially around Brescia and Paicenza; his celebration on 16 august was fixed by the roman calendar at the end of the XV century, even though the official clebration was established only a hundred years later under the popes Gregorio XIII and Urbano VIII.
