1,200 years ago, Baghdad was the thriving capital of the Islamic world. For about 500 years the city boasted rich cultural activity, particularly in the ninth century. Ruling caliphs had taken a personal interest in collecting scientific works. They also brought together scholars to create one of the great intellectual centres in history, called the House of Wisdom.
