A view of a crowd of figures in the Bank of England's Stock Office. This watercolour shows the Rotunda as it was built by Sir Robert Taylor. It was later altered by Sir John Soane.
From the date of its erection, the Rotunda was used as a Stock Market. It was not until 1838 that the Jobbers and Brokers were dissuaded from transacting business there.
A reoccurring character in Rowlandson's work, Doctor Syntax from William Combe’s The Tour of Doctor Syntax in search of the picturesque, can be seem amongst the crowd. He is on the far left, dressed as a clergyman.
