Lebourg initially studied art the École des Beaux Arts in Rouen and traveled extensively, spending several years in Algeria as a drawing teacher for the Beaux Arts Society of Algiers. He lived in the Auvergne region of France from 1884 until 1888, but preferred the countryside of Normandy and ended up settling in Rouen. He joined the Impressionist group early on, appearing twice in their official exhibitions in Paris in 1879 and 1880, and continued to exhibit at the Salon from 1883 until 1895. In this evening view along the banks of the Seine River, in the twelfth arrondissement of Paris, the towers of Notre Dame are visible in the center-left background.
