The banquet for the Duke of Polignac's wedding

Venice, Italy

This enchanting watercolor depicts the wedding banquet that was held in September 1790 to celebrate the marriage between Armand Jules Marie, second Duke of Polignac, and Baroness Ida Johanna Linna van Neukirchen.
The wedding party took place on the mainland, at the villa Gradenigo in Carpenedo. There were 34 guests seated around a monumental dining table. The absence of service staff and other details supports the hypothesis that this is a sketch that the painter would then use to carry out a more refined work, actually never realized.
