The base of the cartridge box, in a sunken lane, shows an injured foot soldier, dying and handing over his remaining cartridges to the light mobile unit's bugler, so that combat can be continued. If the landscape and sky were created by specialists in the genre, based on their sketches, Detaille and Neuville would themselves go on to paint all of the figures, sharing the length of the panorama. The strongest and most refined workmanship of Detaille's mobile unit bugler is clearly distinct from the more expressive and relaxed workmanship of Neuville's injured foot soldier.
