The Batman

Jadwiga Sawicka's works feature single objects, phenomena, words and phrases taken out of the context of everyday life. The motif of overlapping layers of message appears in a series of paintings in which the artist depicted objects used to hide one's face and decorate, such as masks and ribbons. Batman is one of the images that have their own pop-culture narrative. The artist intentionally exposes the painterly workshop by using broad brushstrokes and stark chiaroscuro. The light pink, smooth background juxtaposed with the sinister, masked face with rugged features surprise and bewilder the viewer.

Jadwiga Sawicka (b. 1959) – creates paintings, photographs, objects, text installations and poetry. Graduate of the Faculty of Painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow (diploma in 1984 from Jerzy Nowosielski's studio). Her art is often described as “written painting” because the artist makes use of slogans and headlines taken from newspapers, advertisements or the Internet.

Her works are in the collections of Bunkier Sztuki, National Museum in Krakow, MOCAK, National Museum in Warsaw, Zachęta in Warsaw, Wrocław Contemporary Museum and Arsenal Gallery in Białystok, to name a few
