Description: Forain dedicated The Beautiful Veronica (or La Belle Véronique) to the poet Théodore de Banville, calling himself a “devoted admirer” and even inscribing the poem of the same name on the work:
The Beautiful Veronica
It was a lovely supper dripping with surprises
The perfectly cooked roasts didn’t arrive cold
On this beautiful winter night we had cherries
And some Johannisberg like at the kings’
All these joyous friends drunk proud of their vices
Exchanging banter like a clear tambourine
The ladies meanwhile sucked on crayfish
And cleaned their fingers with the Rhine wine.
