In the summer of 1998, archaeological works began at the future site of the museum. They were conducted by the Zamek Antiques Conservation Studio. The works revealed the remnants of the horse artillery garrison building and established the location of former streets. Archaeological fragments were discovered, including pieces of ceramics and a number of objects hidden during the last days of the Warsaw ghetto: a Singer sewing machine and burnt Judenrat leaflets (the garrison building had housed the Judenrat offices).
