The Belgian National Congress

Between 1831 and 1839, some Luxembourgers enjoyed the political freedoms of Belgium. In the 1840s, the liberal notable figures of Luxembourg look to Belgium for inspiration. In the neighboring country, the census suffrage also applies, excluding large parts of the population from political participation. However, in contrast to the elected representatives in Belgium, who can actively influence the fate of the country in parliament, the influence of members of the Luxembourg estates assembly remains constitutionally limited in the 1840s. This does not mean, however, that they lack a political opinion.
