This plaque shows the betrayal of Christ in the garden of Gethsemane, surrounded by soldiers and apostles. Jesus is kissed by Judas while he heals the wounded ear of the kneeling Malchus. Limoges enamels were the height of decorative metalwork in medieval Europe. The enamel artists, who were usually patronised by royalty or the Church, produced delicate and beautiful illustrations of biblical scenes and legendary tales.
