The message of the painting, The Birth of the Virgin Mary, could be summed up thus: “as in heaven, so on the earth”, suggested by the painter’s organizing the composition on two planes: the heavenly plane and the earthly plane. The birth of the Virgin is the premise of the future advent of the Kingdom of Heavens, because her physical being is one of the preconditions of the fulfilment of the prophecy, concerning the coming of the Messiah. ©Dana Roxana Hrib, European Art Gallery Guidebook, Second edition, Sibiu 2011.

- Artist Biography: Giovanni Francesco Caroto, also called Carotis, was born in Verona and started his artistic training under the guidance of Liberale da Verona (1445 – 1526/29), whose style clearly influenced his beginnings. Nevertheless, his true mentor and the most powerful influence upon his entire work was Mantegna, with whom Caroto studied in Mantua. At various times, throughout his career, Caroto was also influenced by a number of other painters: Titian, Francesco Bonsignori, Leonardo da Vinci, Raphael, Giulio Romano and, consequently, he was labelled an eclectic. In spite of this, he never lost a certain individuality of style, nor did he lose lush Venetian colouring. ©Dana Roxana Hrib, European Art Gallery Guidebook, Second edition, Sibiu 2011.
