A wilderness scene: a native Indian with a bow and arrow seated on a horse looks into the distance at another hunter also riding. In the right foreground another horse with a dismantled rider. Top right two birds flying.

Baird was of Scottish descent, born in the Manse Kirk Yetholm, Roxburghshire, the only son of Reverend John Baird, and Bessie Hughes, daughter of N.Hughes Esq. of Wexford Ireland. Baird received his early education under his father’s tuition. After attending the nearby Coldstream Academy, he attended the University of Edinburgh. Baird lived in Devonshire from the early 1870’s until the death of his wife at Topsham in 1919, where she is buried.
