George Ames Aldrich

Crocker Art Museum
Sacramento, United States

George Ames Aldrich is best known for Impressionist landscapes of Normandy and Brittany in France. This scene was painted in the historic town of Quimper in Brittany. Aldrich was charmed by Quimper’s architecture, footbridges, and people, finding the subjects in combination perfectly suited for painting.

One of Indiana's best-known landscape painters, Aldrich was born in Worcester, Massachusetts, and studied art in the Midwest, the East Coast, and in Europe, becoming a successful and respected etcher and painter. Between 1909 and 1910, he worked in Normandy and Brittany. In 1918, Aldrich arrived in Chicago and became involved with the South Bend art scene during the 1920s. He exhibited regularly at the Art Institute of Chicago and was a member of the Chicago Galleries Association, the Hoosier Salon, and the Chicago Society of Painters
