The Buck Stops Here is a phrase U.S. president Harry S. Truman kept as a sign on his office desk in the White House. It refers to the notion that he was appointed to make final decisions and therefore had to accept the ultimate responsibility for those decisions. Truman was the president who approved the dropping of atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945. This piece calls attention to notions of individual and collective responsibility and the interrelationship of the two.
