The Commissions invited the artisan to explore their traditional craft to tell new stories, hitherto unexplored. Thus was born the narrative rendering of Buddha stories in Kalamkari. Buddha, is seen here in Padmasana anked by the Bodhisatvas. The gures are rendered with simplicity, emotional detail and the story telling is aided by captions in Telugu, the artist’s mother tongue.
The Buddha again was an attempt by Visvakarma to let Kalamkari explore more religions. Buddha and his life stories is the subject matter here. The Assumption panel had four crosses at the four corners while the Buddha panel features lotus feet. The central panel features Buddha flanked by Bodhisatvas. Painted Scroll cloths that aid story telling have been a long standing tradition in India. That Kalamkari was let to explore other story lines is a commendable feat of Visvakarma textiles.
