Odilon Redon (1840-1916)_was deeply interested in eastern spirituality. The material and painting technique make a matt and flat decorative mural-like effect, like a fresco. Like many contemporary artists, Redon wanted to integrate art into daily life. He intended the painting to be an integral decorative feature of an interior.
