The Bull

Ángel Ferrant’s sculptural work remained faithful to the spirit and the formal criteria of the pre-war avant-garde. He cultivated surrealism in it, interested in associations of different elements that, in his case, sought integration rather than the provocation of shock in a viewer on account of their surprising and heteroclite nature. The title of his sculpture, Toro, appears to us almost a pretext in order to create an open curvature of form.

Ángel Ferrant carried out various experiments, mainly aimed at opening up and developing material in space. The forms, as in Toro, bend backwards upon themselves, sometimes in exaggerated twists which seem to highlight the penetrability of space. Here his curious treatment of wood would seem to be more suitable for iron. Nevertheless, wood was one of his favourite materials, although the truth is that he used many others, such as stone, fired clay, bronze and wrought iron. It is obvious that in this sculpture he shied away -- as in the rest of his work -- from any kind of anecdote, while the form of the bull constitutes the point of departure for such an unexpected curvature in the material.
