In 1867 Garibaldi and his men tried another military mission on Rome; the volunteers clashed with French troops guarding the city in defence of the Pope. Pavia-born brothers Enrico and Giovanni Cairoli were among the casualties. The climax of the fighting came in the battle of Mentana on November 3rd , which resulted in Garibaldi's defeat.
