On March 20, 1848, the inhabitants of Wiltz directly address the King-Grand Duke, demanding the swift proclamation of a liberal constitution. This demand also appears prominently in other petitions. Just over three months later, on June 23, 1848, the new constitution is adopted by 56 votes to 2. In his closing speech, the president of the constituent assembly, Governor de la Fontaine, declares that the deputies "with patriotism and dedication, establish the country's freedoms and its political organization."
