Royal Irish Constabulary Sergeant pointing at the back of the vehicle where a bullet entered Lord French's motorcar on 19 December 1919 (Field Marshal John Denton Pinkstone French was at the time British Viceroy, Lord Lieutenant of Ireland and Supreme Commander of the British Army in Ireland.) The attack was known as the Ashtown ambush - an unsuccessful assassination attempt by the IRA on Lord French as he made his way from Ashtown railway station (having returned from Frenchpark, Co. Roscommon) to the Phoenix Park
