A water cascade, built for the 1st Duke of Devonshire was designed by Monsieur Grillet, a French hydraulics engineer who has undertaken decorative waterworks for Louis XIV of France, took two years to build and was completed in 1696.

The Cascade was remodelled and completed in 1708 and was nearly twice the length, and substantially wider, than the original.
