The Fela's Republic & The Kalakuta Queens musical chronicles Fela's birth, activism and his non-traditional family. It explores the life of the legend Fela, and the women that were an integral part of his band. A unique insight into the inner walls of Fela's Kalakuta Republic reveals the women and their unique fashion, dance and African identities. They were a source of strength and inspirational support to Fela. They endured intimidation and torture from the police and the general public due to their involvement with Fela. Fela's Republic and the Kalakuta Queens is a never been told historical piece depicting the defiance of a legend and the lives of his women. This musical was produced and directed by Bolanle Austen-Peters and is one of the biggest musicals to come out of Africa.
