A monastery is thought to have been established at Tynemouth by the mid-7th century. It was refounded by the Earl of Northumberland in 1085. In 1296, permission was granted to surround the monastery with protective stone walls. Following the Dissolution, the site was modified to become an artillery castle and it continued to be part of the nation's defences until 1960.
