The boom in La Jolla tourism, driven by rail, bus, and stage lines from San Diego, brought attention to the Mammoth Caves at the north end of Coast Boulevard. In 1902, Gustav Schultz, a civil engineer, hired two Chinese laborers to dig a tunnel through the sandstone bluff, providing direct access to the caves from his small wooden store—now the Cave Store.
