The City of Ottawa had a population of just over 27,000 people in 1886 when the Central Experimental Farm was formally established. The Farm was barely a decade old before residential streets reached its boundaries. By 1896, Ottawa had grown to almost 59,000 urban residents. Today, the City of Ottawa is home to over 880,000 people.
