John Lewis Krimmel was known as "the American Hogarth" for his genre pictures—scenes from everyday life— in the early nineteenth century. His images of country weddings, Fourth of July celebrations, dances, and other frolics appealed to both popular and critical taste. He is considered the first professional genre painter in the United States and an important influence on the later development of this type of painting.
