Though he had moved to England, Boughton sent a painting titled Christmas Eve to the New York's National Academy of Design in 1869. This work may be related to that composition. He made his reputation with large historical scenes featuring the Pilgrims or early Dutch settlers in New York, but in England began to paint more intimate works. Here, he treats us to a small portrait of a girl standing in the snow.
