The Church Militant

This icon reproduces an original from the Tretyakov Gallery, Moscow, from sixteenth century. Its warlike composition includes various processions of saints, civil and ecclesiastical authorities as well as armed soldiers targeting to the Celestial City. The Virgin and Child welcome them to heaven on the top left, while on the opposite side, defined by a circle, a depiction of hell.
