Riding a bicycle is believed to have zero environmental impacts, but in reality bicycles are not 100% carbon footprint-free. This is due to the emissions generated in the manufacturing, distribution, and disposal processes of bikes. Thousand is the brand behind “A helmet you’d like to wear” and Dakkom crafts maker collaborated in an attempt to reduce carbon footprints.
To reduce carbon emissions, a desired helmet was created by filling the interior of an old helmet with gravel and soil, and planting a sustainable plant that could be nurtured for an extended period. In this piece inspired by Dakkom’s wind chime, old bicycle helmets are upcycled to hold plants and encased in knotted macrame flower pot hangers in a helix, depicting the infinite circle of life within the nature.
