The Classic Bridge in the grounds of Chiswick House was built in 1774. It was designed by the architect James Wyatt for the fifth Duke of Devonshire. The bridge crosses the Serpentine River, which was formed from the Bollo Brook, first as a canal and later as an irregular stretch of water. The bridge was damaged by bomb shrapnel during the Second World War.
