The Cloisters was designed by architect WH Cowlishaw. It was built in 1906-7 for Annie Jane Lawrence and was intended to be an open-air adult school. Over the years its function has changed. It was converted into a preparatory school, became a concert hall, and by 1948 had become a masonic lodge.
