"Pere Jou i Francisco (Barcelona, 1891 – Sitges, 1964) arrived in Sitges in 1915 called by Miquel Utrillo to work in the decoration of the architectural ensemble of Maricel, the residence that Charles Deering (South-Paris, Maine, 1852 – Miami, Florida, 1927) made build in Sitges.
Jou chiselled an important set of capitals based on different topics. This one that decorates the window devoted to Maricel construction represents a series of characters performing different jobs including trowels, carpenter or stone mason Antoni Fígols. On the far right of the work Jou sculpted a capital with his self-portrait.
Jou’s work belongs to the Noucentisme, characterised in general by compact shapes and done by direct carving method."
