The Conversion of Mary Magdalene

Peter Paul Rubens, Federico Zuccari

National Museums Liverpool

National Museums Liverpool
United Kingdom

Zuccaro's composition is a study for the right half of a painting in the Grimani Chapel (now destroyed) at San Francesco della Vigna, Venice. The left corner has been added and made up by Rubens to complete the composition, although it is more in the style of Raphael than Zuccaro. Rubens also added white heightening to the lady in the right foreground.

It depicts the moment when Mary Magdelene kneels in recognition before Christ to remonstrate with him over the death of her brother Lazarus, while her sister Martha acknowledges Christ as the Messiah.
