Napoleon stands on a balcony, looking across Paris. He is portrayed naturalistically, although accompanied by the Devil and Death and by four generals whose features are caricatured. The street is filled with a mob carrying severed heads on pikes, an image – to the British audience – reminiscent of the worst days of the Revolution. Napoleon appears anxious, but the Devil is thrilled, and the atmosphere is ominous.
