This work admirably describes the elevated elegance of the effigy, and the fashion of the late 19th century. The sculptor was famous for his ability to portray his models with incredibile fidelity. So much so that he was accused of casting his figures, instead of modelling them by hand. In 1905 Cifariello was accused of murdering his wife out of jealousy. The trial, from which he was acquitted, was one of the most followed judicial events of the period.
