The Creation of Eve

Tullio Garbari1928/1928

Museo Diocesano Tridentino

Museo Diocesano Tridentino
Trento, Italy

This is an oil version of the small ink drawing of 1926, exhibited one year later at the Scopinich Gallery during the exhibition ‘Quindici artisti del Novecento Italiano’ (Fifteen artists of the Italian 20th century).
Garbari depicts one of the interpretations of the biblical theme most influenced by the memory, or better by the vivid experience, of nature. Adam is asleep on in mountain meadow abloom with gentian, primrose and Madonna lily, while a cow grazes further off amidst the greenery. The scene is vaguely reminiscent of Michelangelo’s in the Sistine Chapel, but while the Tuscan maestro set the scene among rocks and broken tree trunks, Garbari stages it in a field covered in soft grasses, a sort of earthly Paradise that looks like the familiar Alpine landscape of his Trentino.
