Alejandro Diaz’s deliberate pairing of serious art historical themes, like still lifes and crucifixions, with banal dollar store doilies subverts viewers’ expectations of high art while paying homage to the history of painting and his Latinx culture. After all, according to Diaz “... a Crucifixion painting is de rigueur for any self respecting Latinx artist.”
