This is the central panel of an altarpiece showing the Crucifixion, with background scenes relating to the Passion . The shutters of the altarpiece depict other scenes surrounding the crucifixion: Christ led from the Praetorium on the left wing, while the right wing shows The Descent from the Cross.
The donor in the central panel has been thought to belong to a Charterhouse, St Bartholomew in Jerusalem, near Delft.
The tower in the left background of the central panel is that of the New Church, Delft. It was completed as shown here in 1496, and altered in 1536.
