Künstler Informationen: Even though he was descended from a family of scholars, Hans Baldung Grien did not attend university, but still managed to become a great German Renaissance painter. He is also renowned for his printmaking, with woodcuts as his preferred material. He started his apprenticeship when he was 15 years old, probably in the workshop of a Strasbourg master. After having joined Albrecht Dürer's Nuremberg workshop in 1503, he soon became recognized as his master's most brilliant student. He initially mainly produced altar images, while later applying himself to commissions from wealthy art enthusiasts, becoming favoured for his portraits, such as for that of Charles V.
