Mary and John stand on a narrow stage beneath the cross as witnesses to the death of Christ. With them are Ursula, Magdalene, Dorothy and Christopher. These saints enjoyed widespread popularity in the late Middle Ages. The graceful, childlike figures, the delicate modeling and the warm colors are typical of Lochner, the most important Cologne painter of the Middle Ages.
