Yonkers, NY, United States

Winfred Rembert grew up in the 1950s in the segregated South just before the height of the Civil Rights movement. Though the harsh memories that inspired his artwork included childhood labor in cotton fields and surviving an attempted lynching, he also found power in celebrating the joys of play. As a child, he and his friends sometimes skipped school to meet in the woods and swim under the railroad trestle they called the “curvey,” depicted here.
