The Recumbent Christ, also known as the Holy Christ of Hope, was donated to Segovia Cathedral by the Canarian painter Rafael Peñuelas Fernández. Displayed in the Under-Cloister Painting Room, it was created in 1944 and depicts Christ's dead body on a shroud bearing the marks of the Passion, set against a backdrop resembling a tomb. The painting draws on references to 17^(th)-century depictions of the recumbent Christ, such as the one in Segovia Cathedral by Gregorio Fernández, who is considered one of the leading exponents of Baroque sculpture in Castile.
