The Dead Crist

The Dead Christ, the central figure of the Good Friday Procession in Mendrisio, is a polychrome wooden sculpture by an unknown artist dating from the seventeenth century. Its vividly rendered wounds reflect the dramatic realism of Baroque art and recall Christ's suffering during the Passion. Today, the statue is carried on a bier draped in red velvet by bearers dressed in mourning attire, preserving a centuries-old tradition that marks the climax of the procession.
