VISITS TO ARABIC HOMES
On 2 December Ida Uhse writes in her travel diary: “Early in the morning we went to the Coptic church and were there as early as 8am to be able to witness the entire service. We were given bread to eat and the Countess kept hers as a memento. After breakfast we viewed two Arabic houses. We were also given the opportunity to visit harems in former palaces where the ceilings were high and gilded and painted. The harem ladies were happy and delighted, unfortunately we were not able to understand their questions. We also saw a ladies' bath, but it was so hot in there that we could barely stand being there for more than a few minutes.
In the evening we had dinner at the Cedercrantz residence.”
