John Delaval's Drawing Room was the pinnacle of his renovated house. It was decorated with fashionable flocked wallpaper and gilded mirrors on the walls, in front of which candles could be mounted so that John's guests could be entertained by him long into the night. Large paintings of John, his brothers and sisters, and other relatives were hung on the walls to celebrate his family and demonstrate their wealth - after all, only the rich could afford to commission portraits.
