The great funerary monument was erected by the will of Michelangelo nephew, Leonardo Buonarroti, between 1574 and 1575. Tiberio Titi chose to depict the moment in which the bust of Michelangelo, carried out by Battista di Lorenzo, was located above the sarcophagus. Protagonists on the scene are the two journeymen which with the use of rope and pulleys are hoisting the sculpture. In the background, the interior of Santa Croce, receives the curious viewers who witness the scene. The emphasis showed by Titi in the naturalistic effect of the episode and in the luminous and pictorial effects recall the Caravaggio manner.
