The first reference to sea bathing at Weymouth dates from 1748. It soon attracted wealthy patrons and was visited by Prince William Henry, Duke of Gloucester in 1765. Weymouth continued to be a popular holiday destination until visitor numbers declined in the late 20th century.
This aerial photograph shows the popularity of Weymouth's beach in the summer of 1932. In the centre are two bathing saloons and numerous bathing tents line the curve of the Esplanade.
