Seated in his comfortable home, a rabbi tests a student on the portion of the Bible learned during the week. To encourage the boy and perhaps lighten his ordeal, the rabbi's attractive daughter displays a plate of fruit as an eventual reward. The fruit has been interpreted as a symbol of the spirit or intellect; the boy's partaking of it serves to ensure the survival of Judaism.
