Matera, Italy

Matera, also known as the "Underground City", is an example of how humans adapted to their surrounding environment, giving the city those characteristics that have made it famous the world over. Its system of water collection, its subterranean architecture, its millenary history were the characteristics which helped to make the city become a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1993.
It is precisely from this link between territory and people that the journey of "Ars Excavandi" begins. Curated by Pietro Laureano, this exhibition was conceived as a space-time tunnel between the past and future. It seeks to find the answers on how to build the cities, or, perhaps, create the planets of tomorrow in the relative subterranean art and culture.
